2006 PaperClay Workshop with Rosette Gault
Report on workshop by John Hampton,
I attended the Paper Clay workshop this summer and had a wonderful time experiencing the possibilities of paper clay. I am an experienced clay artist and had heard of paper clay but never used it before. Rosette was a delightful instructor full of energy and extremely knowledgeable. She is the inventor of modern paper clay and has published several books and a CD on the topic. You can find out more information on her web site www.paperclayart.com. During the workshop we learned how paper clay is made and how to produce it ourselves and how it allows the artist to break many of the traditional rules of regular clay. Rosette demonstrated many of the possibilities for using paper clay. Making your own paper clay mix, hand building construction, slabs and tiles, sculptural forms, figure forms, textures, glazing and firing, armatures for sculpture, and attaching bone dry green ware parts, were just some of the areas she covered. I am still processing all the information she presented to use in my own work. If you are interested in paper clay I recommend a visit to her web site, her books or if she is in your area doing a workshop go. |
